Beginner Level Course

Learning Objectives: This course will teach the basics of chess. Pupils will be able to play a very basic game of chess at the end of this course.         

Best for: Complete beginners (Senior Infant and upwards)

Prior knowledge: Reading skills, numbers (1-8), letters (a-h)

Contents: Chessboard; Pieces: how they move, how they capture; Rules: check and checkmate;  Rules: pawn promotion; Basic chess tactics: values of the pieces, concept of piece defence

Intermediate Level Course

Learning Objectives: Pupils will gain knowledge of all the chess rules at the end of this course, and will learn tactics basics.

Prior knowledge: Pupils should already have knowledge of the basic chess rules (see introductory course).

Contents: Rules: stalemate and other draws, castling, en-passant; Mates; Tactics: forks; Algebraic chess notation
